Hugely successful pop music producer One of the most successful and artistically significant record producers, in popular music, in the last half-century, Arif Mardin, the Turkish-American, was a guiding force behind hit records by many pop luminaries whose careers he was instrumental in shaping. Winner of 12 Grammy Awards, including two for best producer, non-classical (in 1976 and 2003), Arif was a major architect of the pop-soul style nicknamed the Atlantic Sound in the late 1960s. Arif's work with the Bee Gees re-ignited their stalled career and directly influenced their score for 'Saturday Night Fever,' whose soundtrack became the best-selling album for a long time. His other famous hits as a producer include 'Jive Talkin' (the Bee Gees), 'Send in the Clowns' (Judy Collins), 'Against All Odds' (Phil Collins), 'The Wind Beneath My Wings' (Bette Midler), 'You Belong to Me' (Carly Simon) and 'I'm Every Woman' (Chaka Khan). Born into an aristocratic family in petroleum business, at Istanbul, Arif Mardin, something of a perfectionist, died of pancreatic cancer at his home in New York City.
