Shah Husayn

Birth:1538

Death:1599

Punjab's Sufi poet. Growing as a religious scholar, his devotion and piety attracted a large number of followers. His infatuation with a Brahmin boy, Madhu Laal, and singing and dancing in ecstasy with the boy in Lahore's streets with poetry flowing smoothly from his lips drew his devotees including Sikhs and Hindus. Shah's disciple included many Mughal princes. An annual festival of lights (Mela Chiraghan), originally initiated by a courtesan of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh, he himself reported to be a devotee, is a popular event of Lahore converging to celebrate the mela. Shah Husayn was born into a weaver family, received early education in a mosque and mastered other faculties of religious knowledge.
