An advocate of political and social reforms in Bahrain. In 1938, Fakhroo was imprisoned for taking part in a protest against the deportation of key nationalist figures to India. Fakhroo was one of the founding members of the first Bahraini National Union Committee (NUC), in 1954, symbolising the national unity of all Bahrainis and the first step towards liberation of the country. NUC outlined its demands to include an elected legislative assembly, modern penal code and civil law, reform of the judiciary, a constitutional court and the legalisation of labour unions and professional associations. NUC was transformed into a formidable force capable of challenging the British colonial power and the ruling family. Following riots in support of Egypt in defending itself against the tripartite invasion of 1956, Fakhroo was arrested, tried by the British and imprisoned from 1956 until 1964. Following the independence of Bahrain from Britain, in 1970, Fakhroo was elected to the National Assembly, in 1973, until the Assembly was dissolved in 1975. Ebrahim Muhammad Fakhroo was born in Qatar to a merchant family that moved to Bahrain when he was aged 4.
