Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono

Birth:1949

Death:

Indonesia's first directly elected President. Yudhoyono who was inaugurated as Indonesia's sixth President, in October 2004, after the outgoing President Megawati Sukarnoputri, displays a degree of firmness that he has acquired during 29 years of military career. His cautious and consensual style has served Indonesia well. Susilo's greatest achievement has been to help bring what increasingly looks like a permanent peace to Aceh, a separatist province on the island of Sumatra, which has been fighting for independence for 30 years. In the economic arena, Susilo has personally unblocked a tottering deal between the state-owned energy company, Pertamina, and America's Exxon by replacing Pertamina's top management. Susilo has dared to cut Indonesia's costly oil subsidies, kept growth steady and rupiah strong. His anti-corruption drive, which landed even his own son's father-in-law in jail, drew plaudits in a country where graft often feels omnipresent. In 2005 and '06, SBY presided over glitzy infrastructure summits in which more than 100 projects were trumpeted heralding miles of new roads and sea links to better connect this far flung archipelago of 240 million people to fire internal growth engine. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono commonly known just as SBY in his country won re-election as Indonesia's President in a landslide, in 2009, for second five-year term. Yudhoyono a former four-star general is an intellectual heavyweight - his personal library contains 13,000 volumes, and he is well read in history and economics - and possesses a remarkable discipline to complete his Ph. D, in agro-economics, entitled: Agrarian and Rural Development as a Strategy to Eradicate Poverty and Unemployment and he finished his doctoral thesis in the middle of a presidential campaign. On his reflections on politics and leadership Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's 'There is Always a Choice' stretches to an eye-watering 802 pages book. Susilo was born into an army family in east Java.
