Shaykh Hamza Yusuf travelled to Muslim world and studied for ten years in the United Arab Emirate, Saudi Arabia as well as North and West Africa. He received teaching licenses in various Islamic subjects from several well-known scholars in various countries.
Shaykh returned to the US and took degrees in Religious Studies and Health Care. He started teaching and founded Zaytuna Institute which has established an international reputation for presenting a classical picture of Islam in the West and which is dedicated to the revival of traditional study methods and the sciences of Islam. As the executive director of the institute, he travels frequently to major North American and European cities to teach and lecture to both Muslims and non-Muslim audiences.
Shaykh Hamza has translated several classical Arabic texts and poems into English. His classes on the life of the Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him, produced as a 24-audio tape set that has sold thousands of copies worldwide.
Hamza Yusuf was born Mark Hanson in Walla Walla, Washington and grew up in Northern California in a Greek Orthodox family. He embraced Islam in 1977 in Santa Barbara, California and set off almost immediately to study Arabic, Islamic jurisprudence, philosophy, and spiritual psychology with masters in the Muslim world. He currently resides in the Bay Area, northern California.
