Akbar Hydari Sir

The administrator, educationalist and one of the outstanding finance Ministers of his day in India. He belonged to the famous Tayabji family of Bombay. A contemporary of Abdullah Yusuf Ali, translator of the Qur'an. He took the lead in the foundation of the Osmania University with Urdu as the medium of Instruction. He believed that only vernaculars could be an effective medium of instruction. He was the finance minister and later prime minister of Hyderabad and was knighted in 1928. He provided patronage to the leading Islamic publication of the period, 'Islamic Culture', edited for a period by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall. Sir Akbar's daughter is believed to have married Rashid Ali, son of Abdullah Yusuf Ali.
