Chairman of Western Indian Match Company (WIMCO) since 1964 until two years before his death. He held other chairmanships and directorships of top Indian companies and presidentship of the Bombay Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India. He was an honorary Swedish Consul General in Bombay and was decorated by Swedish and German governments.
Akbar was the grandson of Sir Akbar Hydari, PC, and the son of Sir M. S. A Hydari. He was an Oxbridge, an articulate conversationalist with charm and a sought-after guest at dinner parties.
