Ahmad Vefik Pasha
Born in Constantinople, he was a statesman and Turkish scholar.
He was ambassador to Iran and France, presided over the first Turkish parliament, and was appointed Governor of Busra in 1879, where he established the first Ottoman theatre.
Ahmad translated Moliere into Turkish and compiled dictionaries and geographical manuals edited the first yearbook (1847) of the Ottoman Empire and published a Concise Dictionary of pure Turkish words in 1879.
