Sufi Sidi Barakat legitimated the Sadi family of Sharifs as leaders of the Jihad that expelled the Portuguese and established an Islamic state in Sudan (1511-1603). When the Sadi family was ruling in Morocco, a number of other Muslim states emerged in the Sudanic region: Songhai, Hausa, Darfur, Fungi, etc.
