Muhammad Khudabanda

The grandson of Halaku, during whose reign Shia branch of Islam was proclaimed the state religion of Islam. Khuda Banda or Oljeilu in his youth had converted to Buddhism, but later he became a Sunni and took the name of Muhammad Khudabandah. During 1307-08 a bitter religious war between the Hanafis and Shafi's made him so disgusted that he turned a Shia, under the influence of Ibn al Mutahhar al Hilli and after a pilgrimage to the shrine of Hazarat Ali, he proclaimed Shia Islam to be the state religion in 1309-10. After the death of Mahmud Gazan, another convert to Islam, he succeeded to the throne in 1304. He conquered Jilan in 1307 and crushed a rebellion in Hara. He built a new capital at Sultaniyah. He was a patron of the arts and it was due to his support that Rashid Uddin could write his monumental world history.
