The poet scholar who was the greatest representative of Chagatai Turkish literature (written in an eastern Turkish dialect.) Navai first started writing in Persian but later on switched to Chaghtai. He has left four divans and wrote in prose such as Muhakmat al Lugatayn, Majalis an Nafais, Mizan al Awzan. His poems included Farhad and Shirin in 12,000 lines. His collection of odes in Turkish, written under the poetical name of Nawai, amounted to 10,000 couplets. His parody of Nizami, containing nearly 30,000 couplets was greatly admired in Turkish poetry, in which he was known to be without a rival. The Chugtai language is also known as the language of Navai. After his schoolmate Sultan Hasayn Bayqarah came to the throne of Herat, Navai became a member of his court and was responsible for much construction in the city. Navai's other interests included music, painting, architecture and calligraphy. Navai Ali Shir was born in Herat, and studied in Mashad. He was a disciple of the great Iranian poet Jami.
