A feared disciplinarian who was entrusted with the task of rebuilding the shattered and demoralised Egyptian army in the aftermath of the War of 1967.
Gen Fawzi passionately believed in Nasser's principle of Arab socialism. Out of loyalty to Nasser's memory he tried to topple Anwar Sadat in 1970.
Gen Fawzi's last three decades of his life was spent on writing books and lecturing on the military history of the Nasser period.
