This name was given to Qais who lived in the time of the Caliph Hasham of the House of Ummaya, about the year 721. Majnun had fallen in love with Laila. These lovers are still very famous throughout the east. They were separated because of the greed of her father who wanted her to marry a very rich man. Qais became insane from disappointment and his name was changed to Majunu (the man possessed by a Jinn). Majnun love story is celebrated throughout the Muslim world. Nizami Ganjawi, the Persian poet was the first one to versify it in his Laila wa Majnun.
