A former student leader and a leading Sudanese Islamic activist. Ahmad built up his charisma as student in Khartoum University and had been able to incite the whole student population against the leftist military regime of General Numeri. In 1970s he went to the US where he became active in the Muslim Students Association and later in broader Muslim-American community. In 1980s he went back to Sudan where he was elected to the first democratic parliament after the overthrow of military regime. He also became the editor of Al-Rayah daily, which represented the National Islamic Front (NIF). In 1980s he returned to the US and resumed his work there and did extensive travelling inside and outside of the US. In the closing years of his life, Ahmad devoted particular attention to the welfare of Muslims in China where he also spent some of his time on various schemes to enhance the institutional and economic capacities of Chinese Muslims. Ahmad Osman Makki, a warm and gentle person, died suddenly recovering after earlier abdominal surgery, in a Chicago hospital. Most of the political leaders in Khartoum, including President Al-Bashir, attended his funeral.
