Haji Shari Atallah

Birth:1781

Death:1840

The founder of the Faraiziya sect. He went on a pilgrimage to Makkah and returned to India in 1802 after about twenty years. He founded Faraiziya movement that stressed the importance of the obligatory duties, Farz, of the Muslims. Furthermore, seeing the exploitation of the Muslim peasants by their Hindu landlords, he organised them, but alarmed at the spread of the new creed which had bound the Muslim peasants together, the landlords drove him away from Dacca and he was compelled to return to his birth place where the preached for the equality of mankind. His son, Muhammad Mohsin better known as Dudu Mian (1819 - 1860) further strengthened the movement started by his father. He organised a society to collect contributions and whenever a landlord tried to enforce his rights, funds were provided to sue him in the court. Haji Shari At Allah was born in Faridpur, Bengal, British India.
