Ahmad Ibn Mustafa

The 10th ruler of the Tunisian dynasty of Husaynid. He succeeded his brother in 1837 and tried to modernise his army on European models. In the Crimean War (1853-56) he sent his forces to fight with the allies. Prior to his rule, Tunisia was a part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1845 he was recognised by the Turks as an independent ruler. He abolished slavery in 1846. His cousin Muhammad succeeded him in 1855.
