The founder of the Rifaiyya Silsila.
He was born into an Arab family and spent the whole of his life in Bataih, the marshlands of southern Iraq between Basra and Wasit, leaving it only once in 1160 to go on to Haj. His disciples were the founder of four different independent tariqqas. Badawiyya, Dasuqiyya, Shadhiliyya and Alwaniyya.
Until the 15th century, the Rifaiyya, was the most wide spread of all the tariqas.
