Ruler of Kuwait who made a treaty with Britain. The ruler of Kuwait, Mubarak al-Sabah, who made an agreement with Britain, in 1899, that established his country a de-facto British protectorate although Kuwait remained under nominal Ottoman suzerainty until 1914. Kuwait finally gained independence, in 1961, and an Iraqi claim over the country was warded off with British assistance.
