Baba-e-Urdu (Father of Urdu) A legendary figure Moulvi Abdul Haq, who was known as Baba-e-Urdu, was the foremost campaigner of Urdu language in the Indian sub-continent. The Anjumane Taraqqi-e-Urdu emerged as a powerful outfit under his care. Educated from Muslim University Aligarh Abdul Haq served thirteen years as a translator before being appointed as the provincial Inspector of Schools in Aurangabad, Deccan. He was also elected to the office of Secretary, Department of promotion of Urdu at Delhi All India Muslim Educational Conference. Baba-e-Urdu was the moving spirit behind the Usmania University, Hyderabad, Deccan, where all subjects were taught in Urdu. The textbooks and reference material to be used here were translated and compiled under his supervision. A prolific writer, researcher, scholar, critic and lexicographer Baba-e-Urdu, after his retirement, in 1930, compiled and edited a comprehensive and authoritative Standard English-Urdu dictionary. Migrated to Pakistan, in 1948, poor in health and meagre in resources and yet Baba-e-Urdu re-established the Anjumane Traqqi-e-Urdu in the country just created. He patronised and inaugurated two public libraries, and continually stressed the need for an Urdu university for which he even called a national conference in 1959. Moulvi Abdul Haq, who was born in Hapur in the district of Meerut (UP) and remained unmarried, lived most of his life in Hyderabad, a princely state of British India. He died of cancer in Pakistan.
