Ziaur Rahaman

Death:1981

Army Officer Ziaur Rahaman joined the Pakistan army and was commissioned as a company commander during the India-Pakistan War (1971). Having risen to the rank of Lt. Colonel, he then fought against the Pakistan army for the creation of an independent country, which later became Bangladesh. Ziaur Rahaman became chief of army staff, after the assassination of Mujibur Rahman (1975), chief martial law administrator (1976) and finally President of Bangladesh (1977). Ziaur Rahaman who was born at Sylhet was assassinated in a coup led by Gen. Ershad.
