Agha Muhammad Yahya Khan

Death:1980

A Pakistani soldier and country's president. Yahya Khan became the Chief of the Pakistan army General Staff (1957-62), army commander in chief (1966) and replaced General Ayub Khan in 1969 and thus became president. Yahya Khan was accused of the mishandling of the country's affairs leading to the separation of Pakistan's eastern part into Bangladesh in 1971. He resigned and was sentenced to five years of house arrest, after the debacle. Yahya Khan was born in Chakwal, Punjab and was educated at Dehradun, and later on commissioned in the British army (1938) in India.
