A chief of Mutazilla. Born in Madinah, he went to Basra and joined the circle of Hasan al Basri. His deviation from the view of Hasan Basri was the starting point of the Mutazilla. He wrote several books and pamphlets on the theological and political questions of the day. He believed in the doctrine of free will and held that the Qur'an was created.
