Abubakar Tafawa Balewa

First prime minister of Independent Nigeria. Tafawa Balewa studied at the London University Institute of Education (1945-46). He founded an organisation interested in political reform in 1943. In 1951, his party won the first election of the country and in 1952 he became a minister. In 1957, he was elected the prime minister of his country. Tafawa Balewa's differences with Sir Ahmadu Bello who was the premier of the northern region, was the cause of his downfall in 1966, when a section of the army attempted a coup de'tat and murdered him.
