A Syrian military officer who overthrew the government in 1949 and ruled till 1954.
Shishakli was opposed to the Union of Syria and Iraq. When unification process was being finalised in 1949, he overthrew the government in a coup. Shishakli himself assumed no post of authority but was powerful enough to arrest Fawzi Salu, the prime minister in 1951, who tried to form a government against his approval.
In 1952 Shishakli launched The Arab Liberation Movement.
Shishakli was overthrown in a military revolt and was forced into exile in 1954. He died In Brazil.
