Abd Al Hamid Ben Badis

Birth:1889

Death:1940

An Algerian reformer and leader Ben Badis started a movement to assert the Algerian identity and prepare his countrymen for freedom from France. The French, the colonial power, had closed many Islamic centres of education, and had restricted the teaching of Arabic and the Qur'an. Being President of the Association of Oulémas Algerian Moslems he was an emblematic figure of the Muslim reformist in Algeria. He devoted his energy in reforming of the religious practice in his country. In 1925 he published Al-Muntaqid, a periodical, later on considered subversive by the colonial administration and was banned. Then he brought out the famous Ach-Chihab. He authored many books and also established and headed, in 1931, an organisation, The Muslim Scholars of Algeria. Abdelhamid Ben Badis was born in Constantine where he died. He belonged to a patrician family whose origin went back to the founder of Algiers.
