Politician and historian.
He was a co-founder, and chairman, of the Popular Front of Azerbaijan, which in December 1989 led an uprising against Soviet power. First elected President of Azerbaijan after the 1991 break-up of Soviet Union. A secular moderniser and advocate of reviving Azerbaijan's links with Turkey. His insistence that Russian troops and bases be removed from the country, that a local currency, the manat, be introduced and the abandonment of the Cyrillic alphabet marked his yearlong tenure.
He was removed from his position following humiliating losses in the conflict with Armenia over the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Elchibey whose original surname was Aliyev was born in Keleki, died of prostrate cancer in Ankara, Turkey and buried in Baku with a state funeral.
