Founder of the Sufi brotherhood.
Saunsiyah, founded in 1837, was reformist movement aimed at return to the simple faith and life of early Islam. By the turn of the 20th century, the order was well entrenched in Libya, central Sahara and the Hejaz.
Sanusi authored As Salsabil al Main fit Taraiq al Arbain and Al Masail al Ashas.
Sanusi's great grandson Muhammad founded the Idrisi dynasty of Libya in 1905. After World War I, they emerged as a powerful political force.
The last Sanusi, king Idris of Libya (1951-69) was overthrown in a coup led by Col. Qaddafi in 1969.
Sidi Muhammad Ibn Ali, also known as Sanusi-e-Azam, (Sanusi the great) was born at Sanus, Algeria.
