An Arabian philosopher and poet. Al-Ma'ari's collection of early poems was known as Saqt Az Zand. His second collection of poems was Luzum Ma Lam Yalzam (unnecessary necessity) which was translated by R A Nicholoson in English. He also wrote Risalat al Ghufran, Al Fasul wa al Gyayat (which was called by some, a parody of the Qur'an). His Risalah influenced Dante in his Divine comedy. D S Margoliruth in English translated his letters. During his last years, al-Ma'ari had turned vegetarian. Born Abul Ala Ahmad Bin Abdullah at Ma'arra in Syria and though a childhood disease nearly left him blind, but in spite of the handicap he proved to be one of the best known Arab poets.
