Shaikh Muhammad Saman

The founder of the Sammaniya order which was an offshoot of the Khalwatiya tariqa. The order spread mainly in Sudan and Ethiopia. The most remarkable product of this order's revivalism was the Sudanese Mahdiya. Muhammad Ahmad (1840-45) who was a follower of the Samimaniya order, and who declared himself a Mahdi in 1881, and waged a holy war against the corrupt Anglo-Egyptian regime, which led to the capture of Khartoum in 1885 and the establishment of a separate Mahadist state in Sudan.
