The Founder of the Ghaznavid dynasty.
He married the daughter of the governor of Ghazna, which was under the control of the Samanid dynasty. When he succeeded as the governor of Ghazna in 977, he overthrew the yoke of the Samanids and in the next twenty years took control of the whole of Afghanistan. His son Mahmud (the great) succeeded him in 998. The Ghaznavid dynasty ruled for about 150 years.
