Abu Abdullah Jafar Ibn Muhammad Rudaki

Birth:c859

Death:c941

The first Iranian poet of note to compose in the new Persian written in Arabic alphabet and regarded as the father of Persian poetry. Rudaki served as the court poet to Nasr II (914-943) in Bukhara. Only a few couplets out of the one hundred thousand couplets that he had written, have survived. His translation from Arabic to Persian of Kalilah wa Damnah, a collection of fables, was one of his best known works. He had fallen out of the favour of Nasr II in 937 and spent rest of his life in poverty. Rudaki was born at Rudak, Khurasan.
