The founder of the Alawi dynasty of Morocco.
Rashid succeeded his brother Muhammad who had struggled to form a principality in northern Morocco. He formed a force of Berber Arabs and made Taza his capital. In 1666 he seized Fez and proclaimed himself Sultan. From Fez he proceeded to conquer the north and occupied Marrakech in 1669. The task of wrestling control of important sea ports from European powers was left to his bother Ismail, who succeeded him.
