Rabih Az Zubair

A military leader of Chad. Rabih was in service of Az-Zubair Pasha, Sudanese prince. In 1878 the Sudanese prince rebelled against the Egyptians. Rabih proved loyal to Az-Zubair but was defeated. He fled to central Africa. By 1890, he was able to gather enough support and in 1893 he occupied Bornu, a district in eastern Chad. He made Dikwa his capital. In 1900 the French who wanted to establish their authority in the region defeated his army and he was killed in the encounter.
