A celebrated mystic of Baghdad (Karkh was a quarter of Baghdad) Maruf was venerated as a Sufi saint and his tomb at Baghdad on the West bank of the Tigris draws pilgrims even to this day. Maruf's most famous disciple was Sari al Saqati who became the master of the famous Sufi saint AL Junaid.
