Mahmoud Zuabi

Birth:1935

Death:2000

Politician. Syria's prime minister for 13 years, Mahmud gained prominence when the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 forced Syria to open up its economy. He attracted private investment through a major economic package in 1994. He championed ideas of Arab common market and opened the first Arab tourism conference in Damascus. Mahmud helped end the years of mutual recrimination between Syria and Jordan. Mahmud was born in the village of Kherbit Gazaleh, near Jordan border and trained as agronomist. He was diligent and patriot. Mahmud and most of his cabinet were summarily sacked few months before the official sources said he killed himself at home, as he was about to be charged with 'economic irregularities and abuses.'
