Maulana As'ad Hussain Ahmad Madani

Patriarch of India's Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind Maulana Madani president of Jamiatulema-i-Hind, since 1973, was also an elected parliamentarian, from 1968 to 1994, of the Indian Parliament. A freedom fighter, and a staunch nationalist known for his commitment to one-nation theory Maulana Madani fought against communalism. A highly respected person in the whole of Indian sub-continent, he was lately involved in anti-terrorist campaigns. Jamait Ulema-e-Hind, a part of the Darul-Uloom (Deoband), is a renowned religious and academic centre in the Islamic world and is the largest institution in the Indian sub-continent for the dissemination and propagation of Islam. It is by far the biggest headspring of education in the Islamic sciences. Deoband produced some renowned Muslim scholars who resisted British rule in India, which ended with independence and partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan in 1947. Maulana As'ad Hussain Ahmed Madani was born in Deoband. He passed away in Delhi, after being in coma for three months following a head injury - he suffered from diabetes and heart disease - and was buried in Saharanpur (UP) attended by thousands of his supporters and well wishers who gathered to pay final respect to him.
